Getting your team to learn and use an entirely new platform can be a challenge, and frankly, a real pain. Here are three core problems we’ve discovered in how most software companies train EMS and fire service professionals:

 

Problem #1

Access to learning opportunities. Our customers range from large municipal agencies with in-house training staff to rural volunteer departments. In many cases, not all staff can be at the station for training sessions, making the transition take longer. Many software companies charge extra to train staff who were unable to make the initial training sessions, increasing unexpected costs to the department.

Problem #2
Carryover of user behaviors. It’s common to try to use a new platform based on how a prior platform was used because of the comfort level achieved. Translating new software through the understanding and use practices of old software also invites shortcut behavior and “this is how it worked on our old one” thinking that thwarts adoption.

Problem #3
Use it or lose it. Software training is often like drinking from the fire hose (pardon the pun)—it’s too much, too fast. When intense training is presented to new users, much of what is taught is forgotten by the time it’s used in the field.
